ART ISLAND HOPPING
Setouchi Triennale| 瀬戸内国際芸術祭

Marine station “Naoshima” Photo : Courtesy of SANAA

Set against the scenic islands and the tranquil waters of the Seto Inland Sea, the Setouchi Triennale first launched in 2010 to bring domestic and global awareness to the area and its issues of declining population. The 2016 edition took place on 12 islands and 2 ports from spring to autumn, with site-specific works by 226 artists. Many of these are large-scale outdoor installations that remain even after the festival and become a part of daily life for the island’s inhabitants. In addition to new works, the visitors can also take in the permanent collection of Benesse Art Site Naoshima, found on the islands of Naoshima, Teshima, and Inujima such as the Chichu Art Museum, Benesse House Museum, and Lee Ufan Museum.
