Inujima is a remote island of Okayama in the Seto Inland Sea with a population of 50 people and average age of 70. It has had a turbulent industrial history through its granite quarries, and a copper refinery that was built in 1909. Today, the islanders coexist with contemporary art and architecture: in 2008 the copper refinery reopened as the energy-sufficient, self-ventilating Inujima Seirensho Art Museum by Hiroshi Sambuichi that houses works by Yanagi Yukinori; scattered within the 0.54 km² of the island are artworks by 5 artists such as Kohei Nawa, Haruka Kojin, Olafur Elliasson in “Inujima Art House Project” structures designed by Kazuyo Sejima. The island is an integral part of the Setouchi Triennale, and also welcomes visitors all year round.
